I am writing this note to
let you know how impressed and pleased I have been with the expertise,
speediness and courtesy of 6 persons who recently worked in my apartment:
3 electricians, your employees, who completely rewired it; 2 plasterers
retained by the foreman, George Brauneis, to fill the resulting holes
and gashes, and who worked so smoothly that nothing will show; and 1 carpenter
contacted by the plasterers to help them repair or replace a ceiling that
threatened to collapse. It all took place in 2 weeks!
They all worked together
like clockwork because they knew each other well and, obviously, liked
and respected each other's skills and personality. Although I am writing
in my own name I consider that, after a long period of bad luck with contractors
and workers, our co-op building is phenomenally lucky to have been able
to contract with Block Electric. You sent us George, who for years has
been training younger electricians and building relationships with colleagues
in the different trades for the benefit of all involved.
Much of the wiring in this
1915 building was original and the rest consisted of "creative"
home jobs from the 1950's or 1960's. Therefore, the work George Brauneis,
David Gniecki, and David Boonstra performed in my apartment was messy and
unpleasant. Yet the team worked amazingly quickly and ingeniously to satisfy
not only Chicago building codes and company bottom line but also my preferences
(which George managed to change by means of solid reasons and good humor
when they were not reasonable).
But what struck me the most
is that George's authority over the younger electricians was all in one
with the care and concern he showed for them as persons and fellow tradesmen.
The experience of having
my old apartment slit open, rewired and closed up, with a bedroom ceiling
that eventually collapsed, ought to have been traumatic. Instead, thanks
to everyone's good character and skills it was unexpectedly friendly,
enlightening, and even fun!
